Using the timer

How do I start and stop the timer?

Press and hold anywhere on the timer face. The display arms when the hold is long enough, and the timer starts the moment you lift off. Press again to stop.

On the website you can also hold the space bar instead of touching the screen. It works exactly the same way: hold to arm, release to start, press to stop.

The timer starts before I mean it to.

Lengthen the hold. Settings → Hold before start offers 0.30s, 0.55s, and 0.80s; the default is 0.55s. A longer hold makes an accidental start much harder, at the cost of a slightly slower ready position.

How do I use WCA inspection?

Turn on Settings → 15 second inspection. A 15-second countdown then runs between arming and the solve, the way it does at a competition.

Which puzzles are supported?

3×3, 2×2, 4×4, 5×5, 6×6, 7×7, Pyraminx, Skewb, Megaminx, Square-1, and Clock. Each gets scrambles of the appropriate type and length, and keeps its own solve history and averages. Switch between them from the puzzle name in the header.

Are the scrambles random-state?

For 2×2 and 3×3, yes — the same way official competition scrambles are made. Splits draws a position at random from every reachable one and writes the scramble as a solution of it played backwards, so every position is equally likely and a scramble is as long as its position needs: up to 11 moves on 2×2, and about 20 on 3×3. The solver runs on your device and builds its tables in the background the first time the app opens; for the few seconds that takes, those two cubes get random-move scrambles instead. 4×4 and larger, Pyraminx, Skewb, Megaminx, Square-1 and Clock are random-move: a sequence of moves drawn at random, in the notation and at the length the official scrambler uses for that event.

Can I see the scramble as a picture?

Yes — Settings → Scramble preview draws the scrambled cube as a flat net beneath the scramble. Turn it off if you would rather read the notation alone.

Solves and averages

How do I add a +2 or a DNF?

Open the solve from the Solves tab and apply the penalty from its detail view. Tapping the same penalty again removes it. Penalties feed straight into your averages: a +2 adds two seconds to the effective time, and a DNF is treated as a DNF, not as a missing solve.

How do I delete a solve?

Open it from the Solves tab and delete it there. A deleted solve is gone from your history and from every average that included it.

Which averages does Splits show?

Ao5, Ao12, Ao50 and Ao100, computed WCA-style — the best and worst are trimmed, and too many DNFs make the whole average a DNF. The headline number matches how each event is actually scored: a mean of 3 for 6×6 and 7×7, and a best of 3 for blindfolded, rather than an average of 5. All of it is free, as is the whole history: every solve you have ever done is on the Solves tab, whether or not you have Pro.

What is the chart on the Solves tab?

A rolling Ao12 sampled along your recent solves, so the line falls as you get faster. It is a trend, not a leaderboard — a single lucky solve moves it much less than a run of consistent ones.

Can I try the stats without doing 80 solves first?

Settings → Load a demo session fills the app with 81 plausible solves so the charts and averages have something to draw. It replaces what is on screen, so load it on a fresh install rather than over a real history.

Challenge links

How do challenges work?

Share a solve and Splits builds a link carrying the puzzle, your time, and the exact scramble. Whoever opens it can race that same scramble and compare their time against yours, side by side. There are no accounts and no invitations — the link is the whole mechanism.

Does the other person need the app?

No. The link opens splitscubetimer.com, which runs the full timer in a browser. If they have the app installed, it opens there instead.

I opened a link and nothing happened.

Challenge links are self-contained, so a link that has been truncated by a messaging app — cut off mid-scramble, or split across two lines — can no longer be read. Ask for it again, sent as a single link rather than pasted as text.

Your data

Where are my solves stored?

On your device. Splits has no accounts and no server holding your times. With Pro, a copy is also backed up to your own iCloud or Google Drive account — never to us. See the Privacy Policy for the full picture.

I got a new phone. Can I move my history?

With Pro, yes, within the same ecosystem: iPhone to iPhone through iCloud, Android to Android through Google Drive. Sign the new phone into the same account, open Splits, and the history merges in — it can take a few minutes to arrive. Without Pro there is no backup, so a history stays on the device that recorded it. Crossing between iOS and Android is not supported either way: the two backups live in two different accounts that we have no way to connect.

How do I erase everything?

Settings → Erase all data deletes every solve on the device after a confirmation. It cannot be undone and there is no copy anywhere else. Deleting the app does the same thing, as does clearing the site's data in your browser.

Splits Pro

What does Pro add?

Memory and organisation, not numbers. The timer, every average, the charts and your whole history are free. Pro adds unlimited named sessions — a warm-up apart from a serious run, one-handed apart from two, a session per competition — backup of every solve to your own iCloud or Google Drive so a lost phone is not a lost history, and hiding the running time while you solve. There is no Splits server: your solves never pass through one, with or without Pro.

How do I cancel my subscription?

In your store account, not in Splits — the app has no account system to cancel through.

iPhone or iPad: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Splits → Cancel Subscription.
Android: Play Store → profile icon → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Splits → Cancel.

Cancelling stops future renewals. Pro stays active through the end of the period you have already paid for.

I want a refund.

Refunds are handled entirely by Apple and Google under their own policies — request one at reportaproblem.apple.com or through Google Play. We are not able to issue one directly, and we cannot see your purchase.

I paid, but Pro is not showing.

Sign in to the same store account that bought it, then open Settings in Splits and tap Restore Purchases. A Pro subscription is tied to the store account that made it, so an iOS purchase does not carry over to Android or the other way round. If it still does not appear, write to us with the date of purchase and the store you bought it from.

Troubleshooting

The app opens on a blank or frozen screen.

Force-quit and reopen it first. If that does not clear it, tell us the device and OS version — Splits collects no diagnostics, so nothing about the crash reaches us on its own.

A scramble looks wrong.

Send it to us verbatim, along with the puzzle. The scramble text is enough to reproduce it exactly.

Does Splits work offline?

Yes. Scrambles are generated on your device and nothing about a solve needs the network. On the website, the page has to load once; after that the timer itself does not need a connection.
